Soul
Soul has been on repeat in my house since Christmas. It has led to some very interesting conversations about life before birth as well as life after death. It’s definitely some deep subject matter. I can admit that I was a bit disappointed with the movie. I have a thing with Disney and black characters. I expected a movie about Soul to have one. My fault. I expected Disney to chime into the Black experience. My fault. Soul to me is not just a religious thing. It’s cultural. It’s soul music. It’s soul train. It’s black fists. It’s full lips. It’s afro picks and picket lines. Soul to me is grandma’s prayers and peppermints. It’s Virginia Slims and black lips. It’s braided hair and pressing combs. Soul is home, but maybe I’m just thinking about the souls of black folks, cause America sold its soul.
Refresh
Do not discount how much a change of scenery can do for your mental health. I had a quick weekend getaway, and I feel like I can conquer the world. The walls aren’t closing in on me as much. The monotony isn’t too much. The routine is a bit easier to get through. I feel refreshed. What have you done today for your mental health? What would make you feel refreshed? Maybe it’s a walk or a run. Maybe it's spending time in the yard. Take care of yourself. Relax. Relate. Refresh.
Happy Place
You’ve got to find your happy place. I know it’s hard to find a happy place under quarantine. I’m so used to finding my happy place in public venues that I had to rethink “me” time. I have learned to appreciate silence and showers. I enjoy cupcakes and extra icing. I have a new appreciation for bluetooth speakers and IG live. These are the things that make me happy. Find your peace. Rediscover your joy. Find your happy place.
Peace
I have learned that peace does not come without work. It does not come without struggle. It does not come without planning. Peace requires a decision to be made, and action to be taken. You have to claim your peace. You have to declare peace in your life and your family. Peace is your portion. Peace is your gift. Peace is a blessing.
Psalm 29:11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
Friendly
Proverbs 18:24 KJV A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Most people would define friendly as being kind or helpful. For the most part, I think we are able to be friendly towards our friends because it's a beneficial relationship, but what about when it's not. What about when it's inconvenient? What about when we are offended or when we disagree? What about when we're tired or had a bad day? Are we still friendly? Are we still kind? Are we still helpful? Let's try to be like the friend that sticks closer than a brother. Let's try to be more like God. Let's try to be friendly.
Prosperity
When we hear the word, “prosperity” many people immediately think money. Don’t get me wrong some prosperity is financial, but God has the ability to prosper you in all areas of your life. You can prosper in your health. You can prosper in your mentality. You can prosper in your perspective. You can prosper in your relationships. You can prosper in your spirituality. My prayer for family and myself is that God would prosper us. I want success in my friendships. I want joy in my kids. I want peace in my life. I want rest when I’m weary. I want God to prosper me. I want to be the blessing he created me to be. I want to give of my time, my tenth, and my talent. I want to share my wealth. I want to exude purpose and promise.
