Sojourner Truth. Harriet Beecher Stowe. Frederick Douglass. Harriet Tubman. William Lloyd Garrison. Lucretia Mott. David Walker. There are many other names to add to that list. These are people who dedicated their lives to the eradication of slavery. Truth be told, the real reason why this was such a daunting task was because of the monetary loss that would occur if the slaves were free. It was all about money. The American economy has always been built on free black contributions. Slaves were a free labor force with minimal investment.
Unfortunately, the real issue behind reform and reparations is as economic as it is racial. We must understand who benefits from systematic racism. We must understand who benefits from prison pipelines and privatization. We must understand how gun control and law enforcement play a role in our current political climate. You can’t get rid of one system without having something else to replace it. We need think-tanks. We need allies. We need lobbyists. We need investors. We need influence. We need avocates. We need abolitionists who understand that racism needs to be eradicated.
I have had two profound experiences with forgiveness. Both were orchestrated beyond my control and both were unexpected moments of release. Forgiveness emancipates you. It frees a piece of your soul. I've always believed that forgiveness is for you. I've been forced to forgive myself. I've been forced to forgive others when no apologies or concern was given. I've had to let go and let God, when I wanted to "get at and react." It hasn't been easy. It hasn't been what I wanted to do at the time, but God is mindful. God knew that I couldn't live with unforgiveness in my heart. I couldn't love with hurt and malice in the way. I couldn't be His best with regret. Free your mind. Let it go. Some burdens are too big to bear. Emancipate yourself
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
-Harriet Tubman
Harriet’s dream was freedom. She made it a reality for herself and made sure that others experienced her dream as well. She was a dreamer. Martin was a dreamer. His dream echoes every February. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come and how far we have to go. You are a dreamer. You have the strength and fortitude to execute your vision. What do you dream about? How close are you to making your dreams a reality? What’s stopping you? Who’s helping you? You have what it takes. You’ve seen it. Now is the time to bring your dreams to fruition.
I've always heard that nothing in life is free. Living in a capitalistic society will definitely make you agree with that sentiment. However, there are a few things in life that are free. Joy is free. Love is free. Hope is free. Affection is free. When you are overwhelmed with life and adult responsibilities remember these lyrics by India Arie:
It doesn't cost a thing to smile
You don't have to pay to laugh
You better thank God for that- India Arie
